What is a Government Subsidy?
The government estimates that approximately 19 million Americans may be eligible for a subsidy, which is a tax credit designed to help pay for their health insurance premiums. This subsidy is called a "Federal Premium Assistance Tax Credit". The tax credit will be paid directly to the individual's insurance company and the individual or family will only pay the unsubdized amount (if any) to the insurance company throughout the year. The amount of the subsidy will vary from person to person, depending on their income.In order to qualify for a subsidy, an individual or family income must be between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. For example, as of June 2013, an individual earning less than $45,000/year or a family of four earning less than $92,000/year would qualify for a subsidy. The lower the income, the higher the amount of government subsidy the individual or family will receive.
To determine the amount of subsidy due, there will be a form to complete that will gather information from each individual or family that will be sent to the government.
