What is the Penalty for Not Having Health Insurance in 2014?
Enrolling in a health insurance plan with minimum essential coverage will be required beginning January, 2014. Plans that will satisfy the requirement can be obtained through an employer-sponsored group plan or a qualified individual health insurance plan (like the plans purchased thorugh Insurance Now inside or outside of the marketplace or exchange).
Failure to enroll in a plan with minimum essential coverage will result in a penalty as follows:
2014 - $95 per uninsured adult or 1% of the household income, whichever is greater.
2015 - $325 per uninsured adult or 2% of the household income, whichever is greater.
2016 - $695 per uninsured adult or 2.5% of the household income, whichever is greater. The penalty for family members under age 18 will be 1/2 the adult rate. The total household penalty may not exceed 300% of the adult penalty or the national average annual premium of the "bronze" level health insurance exchange plan.
Exceptions for individual responsibility to enroll in health insurance include:
- Illegal Aliens
- Individuals who's contributions toward coverage exceed 8% of household income
- Taxpayers with income levels under 100% of the poverty level (They are eligible for Medicaid)
- Those who had coverage for 10 months or more during the calendar year.
Options are still available for a limited time to enroll in a plan that will be eligible for grandfathered status. These plans will allow you to lock in the lower rates of 2013 through next year, when rates are expected to be quite high. We can help you figure out which plan will provide you with the most coverage and cost-effective option. To avoid the penalty for not having health insurance, stop by or contact us at 770-396-9517 or toll-free outside Atlanta, GA at 1-877-711-8376, or you may email us at holly@insurance-now.com or chris@insurance-now.com
