What are My Health Insurance Options Beginning in 2014?
Enrolling in a health insurance plan with minimum essential coverage will be required beginning January, 2014. Plans that will satisfy the requirement can be obtained through an employer-sponsored group plan or a qualified individual health insurance plan (like the plans purchased thorugh Insurance Now inside or outside of the marketplace or exchange) or in some instances, you can keep your current insurance plan if available.
Some individuals and families will qualify for financial assistance, called a subsidy, to help them with purchasing their health insurance. These subsidies will be available based on the number of qualified family members living in your household combined with your annual income.
Additionally, there is the option of enrolling in an insurance plan before the end of 2013 that will lock in this years' rates through the year of 2014. Since insurance plan options for 2014 are estimated to be substantially higher than the rates this year, this may the best option available.
The myriad of plans and requirements for each option can be very confusing. However, if you do not choose a plan, the government will impose a penalty for not enrolling. In some cases, the penalty will cost more than your best health insurance option.
